A Look Back: Valdivia's History
Early Days and Spanish Arrival
Before the Spanish arrived, the land where Valdivia now stands was home to the Nutabes people. They were the original inhabitants of this area.
How Valdivia Grew
In 1849, a Spanish person named Pedro Vasquez bought land here. He started farming and brought workers from other parts of Antioquia. These workers eventually explored and developed more land nearby.
Becoming a Municipality
On February 5, 1892, Valdivia became a corregimiento, which is like a smaller administrative area, part of the municipality of Yarumal. Braulio Berrio was chosen as its first Corregidor, or local leader. Later, in 1912, the Assembly of Antioquia decided to separate Valdivia from Yarumal. They added more land to its territory from other nearby areas and officially made it its own municipality.
Valdivia's Climate
Valdivia has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it's usually warm and wet all year round. Because of its elevation, which is about 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) above sea level, the temperatures are not as hot as in other tropical places. It rains a lot in Valdivia throughout the year.
