Valens Acidalius facts for kids
Valens Acidalius (born in 1567, died May 25, 1595) was a German writer and poet. He wrote his works in the Latin language. He was also known by the name Valtin Havekenthal.
A Young Scholar's Life
Valens Acidalius was born in a town called Wittstock. His father was a pastor in the Lutheran church. From a young age, Valens showed great talent. He studied at several universities, including Rostock, Greifswald, and Helmstedt. Even when he was very young, his Latin poems were noticed and admired by many.
In 1590, Valens traveled to Italy with his friend, Daniel Bucretius. While in Italy, Valens published his first book. It was a special edition of a work by an ancient Roman writer named Velleius Paterculus. Valens also studied philosophy and medicine in a city called Bologna. He earned a special degree that showed he was an expert in both subjects.
A Focus on Writing
Even though Valens had studied medicine, he was not very interested in working as a doctor. Instead, he preferred to focus on studying and understanding old books and writings from ancient times. He became a "critic," which means he carefully read and analyzed classic works.
In 1593, Valens returned to Germany because he had been sick with fevers. He moved to Breslau, which was his friend Bucretius's hometown. In 1595, Valens became a Catholic. Later that spring, he accepted an invitation from his friend and supporter, Wacker von Wackenfels, to visit Neisse. Sadly, Valens Acidalius died there from a fever when he was only 28 years old.
