The Valentine Wightman House was a special old home in Southington, Connecticut. It was built around the year 1800. This house was so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This list helps protect buildings that are important to history. Sadly, the Valentine Wightman House is no longer standing today.

About the Valentine Wightman House

The Valentine Wightman House was located in the western part of Southington. It stood on Mount Vernon Road, where it met Whitman Road. This house was made of wood and had two and a half stories. It had a classic "gabled roof," which means the roof had two sloping sides that met at a ridge. A large chimney was in the middle of the house. The outside was covered with overlapping wooden boards called "clapboards."

What the House Looked Like

The front of the house had five sections, called "bays." The main door was in the middle. On each side of the door were tall, narrow windows called "sidelight windows." Above the door was a decorative piece of wood called a "lintel." The ends of the roof, known as "gables," hung out a little over the sides of the house.

Inside, the house had three old fireplaces. It also had some of its original wide wooden floors and fancy carved wood panels. These features showed how houses were built a long time ago.

Who Lived There

The house was likely built around 1800 for Valentine Wightman. He was the son of Reverend John Wightman. Reverend John Wightman was an important person in Southington. He was the second Baptist minister to live there. His own house is still standing further down Mount Vernon Road.

The Valentine Wightman House was mostly famous for its design. It was a great example of "late Georgian architecture." This style was popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It showed how people built homes during that time.

Today, a newer, smaller house stands where the Valentine Wightman House used to be. The property still has an old barn and other farm buildings from the 1800s.
