Valeria Simoncini facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Valeria Simoncini (born in 1966) is a smart Italian scientist who studies math. She is a professor at the University of Bologna in Italy. Professor Simoncini works on solving very big math problems using computers. Her work helps in many areas of science. She also leads a group at SIAM, which is a big math organization.

Her Journey in Math and Science

Valeria Simoncini started her amazing journey in math at the University of Bologna. She earned her first degree there in 1989. Later, she traveled to the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in the United States. She was a visiting scholar there from 1991 to 1993, learning and sharing ideas.

She then went back to Italy and earned her PhD from the University of Padua in 1994. A PhD is a very high degree that shows you are an expert in your field. After working at a research center called CNR for a few years, she returned to the University of Bologna. She became an associate professor in 2000 and then a full professor in 2010. This means she became one of the top teachers and researchers at the university.

Her Book on Climate Data

Valeria Simoncini also wrote a book with another scientist named Antonio Navarra. The book is called A Guide to Empirical Orthogonal Functions for Climate Data Analysis. It was published in 2010. This book helps other scientists understand how to use math to study information about the Earth's climate.

Awards and Honors

Professor Simoncini has received many important awards for her work in math:

  • In 1997, she won second place for the Leslie Fox Prize for Numerical Analysis. This is a big award for people who do great work in her field of math.
  • In 2014, she was chosen as a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). This honor means she has made very important contributions to a type of math called numerical linear algebra.
  • In 2021, she was also named a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This was for her excellent work in computational mathematics, especially in numerical linear algebra.
  • In 2023, she was elected to be part of the SIAM Council. This means she helps lead and guide the entire SIAM organization.
