Valerie Jean Foushee (/fuˈʃ/ FOO-shee; born May 7, 1956) is an American politician. She serves as a U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 4th congressional district since 2023. This means she helps make laws for the entire country.

Valerie Foushee is a member of the Democratic Party. Before joining the U.S. House, she worked in the North Carolina House of Representatives and the North Carolina Senate. She is the first African American woman to represent her district in the U.S. Congress.

Early Life and Education

Valerie Foushee was born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She went to Chapel Hill High School and graduated in 1974.

Later, she studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned a college degree in political science and African-American studies in 2008.

Early Career and Community Work

In 1987, Valerie Foushee started working for the Chapel Hill Police Department. She was an administrative officer until 2008. This job involved managing office tasks and helping the department run smoothly.

While raising her children, she became very involved in their schools. She joined the School Governance Council, which helps make decisions for schools. In 1997, she was elected to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education. She served on this board until 2004 and was even the chair (leader) from 2001 to 2003.

After that, she was elected to the Orange County Board of Commissioners in 2004. This board helps manage the county. She served there until 2012 and was the chair from 2008 to 2010.

Serving in the State Legislature

Valerie Foushee was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2012. This is part of North Carolina's state government. In 2013, she was chosen to fill a vacant spot in the North Carolina Senate.

As a state senator, she helped create laws for North Carolina. In 2015, she was one of 12 African Americans serving in the North Carolina Senate.
