Valery Dmitrievitch Bolotov (born February 13, 1970 – died January 27, 2017) was a Ukrainian leader. He became known for his role in the Donbas war in eastern Ukraine. He was also a leader of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.
Valery Bolotov's Early Life
Not much is known about Valery Bolotov's life before 2014. He was born on February 13, 1970, in Taganrog, Russia. In 1974, he moved to Kadiivka, which is in the Luhansk Oblast region of eastern Ukraine.
Bolotov said he was a senior sergeant in the Soviet Airborne Troops. He claimed to have taken part in several conflicts between 1989 and 1990. After his military service, he worked as a manager and director at a meat factory. He also ran a small business. Before the conflict in Ukraine, Bolotov was involved with mining operations in the region.
Becoming a Leader in 2014
In 2014, Valery Bolotov became a leader of an armed group during the conflict in eastern Ukraine. On May 13, 2014, someone tried to attack him. They shot at his car, and he was hurt.
Bolotov was briefly captured by the Ukrainian army on May 17. This happened when he tried to return to Luhansk after getting medical help in Russia. However, his supporters quickly attacked the army checkpoint where he was held. They successfully freed him. Bolotov later stepped down from his position on August 14, 2014.
Valery Bolotov's Death
Valery Bolotov was found dead on January 27, 2017. He was in his home in Moscow, Russia. Investigators looked into the cause of his death. Early tests suggested he died from a sudden heart problem.
He had a wife and two children.
