The community of Vales Mills got its name from an important local business. This business was called Vale's Mill. It was a special kind of mill that did two main jobs. First, it was a sawmill, which means it cut down trees into useful pieces of wood. Second, it was a gristmill, which ground grain, like corn or wheat, into flour.

A Look at the Vales Mills Post Office

For many years, Vales Mills had its own post office. This post office was first opened in the year 1878. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. The very first person in charge of the post office, known as the postmaster, was a man named Arthur P. Vale. The post office served the community for a long time, finally closing its doors in 1938.
