The Vallée Family House is a historic home located at 36 Monroe Avenue in Westbrook, Maine. This house was built in 1914. It is special because it was the childhood home of a famous entertainer named Rudy Vallée. He lived here when he started to love music and performing. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This means it is recognized as an important historical place.

About the Vallée Family House

The Vallée Family House is on the east side of Monroe Avenue. This is a quiet street in Westbrook, a town in Maine. The house looks like a typical American Foursquare style home. This style means it is mostly square-shaped. It has two floors and a roof that slopes on all sides, called a hip roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.

House Features

A small windowed section, called a dormer, sticks out from the front of the roof. There is also a porch with a hip roof that goes across the front of the house. A pointed section, called a gable, is above the front steps. This gable has fake wooden beams that look decorative. Big, fancy supports are also under the gable. Inside, the house has a hallway along one side.

Rudy Vallée's Childhood Home

The house was built in 1914 for Charles A. Vallee. He was Rudy Vallée's father and owned a local drugstore. The Vallee family moved to Westbrook in 1905. This is where Hubert Prior Vallee, who later became known as Rudy, grew up.

How Rudy Vallée Became a Star

Rudy Vallée developed his love for music and performing while living in this house. He was surrounded by music from records and phonographs at his father's drugstore. He also worked at local movie theaters, which helped him learn about entertainment. By 1920, he was playing the saxophone in local bands. He became a very famous national star in the 1930s.
