Valley is a neighborhood located in the city of Providence, Rhode Island. It's in the northwestern part of the city. The neighborhood has clear boundaries: Chalkstone Avenue to the north, Raymond Street to the east, Harris Avenue and Atwells Avenue to the south, and Academy Avenue to the west. In the year 2000, about 4,765 people lived in Valley.
Exploring Valley's Landscape
Valley Street cuts right through the middle of the neighborhood. On the north side of Valley Street, you will find many homes. These are often "double-decker" or "triple-decker" houses, meaning they have two or three apartments stacked on top of each other.
Historic Factories and the River
The southern part of Valley is different. It has many old factories and mills. These buildings are located along the Woonasquatucket River. Long ago, these factories made many important things. They built parts for trains, cars, and trucks. Some famous companies that were here include Providence Iron and Steel Co., Monohasset Mill, U.S. Rubber, and American Locomotive Co.
Today, many of these old factory buildings have new uses. They have been turned into places for artists to live and work. Some are now modern office buildings. A good example is The Steel Yard, which is a community arts center. In 2020, a new business opened in the neighborhood. It was the first of its kind in Providence since the 1920s.

Valley is a very diverse neighborhood. This means people from many different backgrounds live there. About 32.5% of the people are Non-Hispanic White. Around 5.2% are Asian or Pacific Islander. About 14.6% are African-American. A large group, 42.4%, are Hispanic.
The average income for families in Valley is about $25,339 per year. Some families in the neighborhood live below the poverty line. This means they have a lower income.
