How Van Leer Packaging Started
Van Leer Packaging was created in 1919 by a person named Bernard van Leer. After World War I, Bernard opened a small factory near Amsterdam. The company grew and started making large containers for industries.
Big Break with Shell Oil
In 1925, Van Leer Packaging got a huge order from the Shell Oil Company. They needed many large steel drums. This was a major success for the company. By 1997, the company was making billions of dollars and growing steadily.
Being Bought by Huhtamäki
In 1999, Huhtamäki, another packaging company, bought Van Leer Packaging. This deal was worth about $1 billion.
Helping Others: The Van Leer Group Foundation
After Van Leer Packaging was sold, the Van Leer Group started a special organization. It's called the Bernard Van Leer Foundation. This foundation helps fund important places. For example, it supports the Jerusalem Film Centre. It also helps the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. These places do important work in education and culture.
