Vanaja Iyengar (died 2001) was an important Indian mathematician and educator. She was the first leader, called vice-chancellor, of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam. This is a special university for women in Tirupati, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. She also helped start the Andhra Mahila Sabha School of Informatics. The Government of India gave her a very high award, the Padma Shri, in 1987.

Life and Work

Early Life and Education

Vanaja Iyengar was born in what was then the state of Andhra Pradesh. She went to school in Hyderabad. In 1950, she studied advanced Mathematics at Cambridge University in England. After her studies, she visited countries like Yugoslavia and Hungary as part of student groups.

Career as an Educator

Her career began as a teacher at Osmania University. She worked at two colleges connected to the university: University College for Women, Koti and Nizam College.

While working at Osmania, Vanaja Iyengar earned her special degree, a doctorate, in Mathematics. She got this degree from the University of Delhi in 1958. She held many important jobs at Osmania University. She was a reader, a professor, and the head of the Mathematics department. She also became the principal of the University College for Women, Koti. For a short time, she even served as the vice-chancellor of Osmania University.

Leading a Women's University

In 1983, a new university was created just for women. It was called Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam. Vanaja Iyengar was chosen to be its first vice-chancellor. She led this university until 1986. She was also one of the people who helped start the Osmania University Teachers Association. She was a lifelong trustee of Andhra Mahila Sabha. She served this organization as its vice-president and later as its president from 1994 until she passed away. She also wrote articles about education.

Awards and Honors

In 1987, the Government of India gave Vanaja Iyengar the Padma Shri award. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in India. She also received the Best Teacher award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. She was also a fellow of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Vanaja Iyengar passed away in 2001. She was married to Mohit Sen, who was a well-known thinker and writer.
