Vanessa Lann, born on April 6, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York, is a talented American-Dutch composer. She lives in the Netherlands and creates amazing music.
She is famous for writing modern music, especially for instruments that aren't used very often, like the bass clarinet, bassoon, and even the toy piano! Her music has been played on the radio, recorded on CDs, and performed at music festivals all over Europe and North America. She has written many different kinds of music, including big pieces for orchestras called concertos, and even operas (musical plays).
In 1990, she was the musical director at the American Repertory Theater, helping to guide the music for their shows. Music critics have praised her work. David Toub said her music was "expertly performed," meaning it was played really well. Allan Kozinn, a music reviewer for The New York Times, described her piece Is a Bell ... a Bell? as having a strong, driving rhythm. He found it charming how she used two toy pianos to create different sounds and textures. Another reviewer, Jed Distler, noted her "gracious keyboard writing and humor," meaning her piano music was elegant and sometimes funny.
Frits van der Waa, a Dutch music critic, has reviewed her music many times. In 2005, he described her music as "intense but sweet juicy tension," and in 2007, he called her composition for the Delft Chamber Music Festival "beautiful."
