Vasanthi Chathurani (born Vasantha Doreen Peterson on October 18, 1959) is a famous actress and producer from Sri Lanka. She is well-known for her natural acting style in both movies and TV shows. Vasanthi started her acting career at just 16 years old. Her first role was in the film Gehenu Lamai.

About Vasanthi Chathurani
Vasanthi Chathurani was born in Bandarawatta, Gampaha, Sri Lanka. Her father, Stanley Peterson, worked in the Army. Sadly, her mother, Lilavathi Peterson, passed away when Vasanthi was a child. She grew up with her older sister, Vinita Helen, at their grandparents' home. Vasanthi went to Holy Cross Convent in Gampaha for her education.
When she was 20, Vasanthi married businessman Kumarasiri Gunawardhana on October 18, 1981. They had one son named Kavinda Asanga Gunawardena, who is now a graphic designer. Her husband passed away suddenly on February 10, 1992, when Vasanthi was 33 years old.
Her Acting Journey
Vasanthi Chathurani was still a school girl when director Sumitra Peiris chose her for a main role in the movie Gehenu Lamai in 1978. One of her most famous movie roles was 'Nirmala' in the hit film Ganga Addara in 1980. In this movie, she played a girl who was mentally ill, acting alongside the late Vijaya Kumaratunga. She was only 19 at the time. In 1981, she won the Sarasaviya Best Actress Award for her amazing performance in Ganga Addara.
Vasanthi also won the Sumathi Most Popular Actress Award in 1997. She received the Sumathi Best Teledrama Actress Award multiple times, in 1998, 2002, and 2009. Her acting career paused for a short time when she got married in 1979. However, her fans welcomed her back when she starred in Adara Hasuna. Some of her other successful films include Duwata Mawaka Misa and Sudu Sevanali. She also played serious roles in films like Amal Biso and Hansa Vilak. In 2003, she appeared in the drama film Wekande Walauwa, which was highly praised by critics.
Vasanthi Chathurani is also well-known for her roles in TV dramas, called teledramas. Some of her popular teledramas include Māyā Mandira, Iṭipahan, Giraya, and Kulavamiya. More recently, Vasanthi has also started producing teledramas herself. She has helped create successful shows like Aga Pipi Mal, Sedona, and Ranga Soba. These shows were directed by Premakumara Jayawardene and written by Sumitra Rahubadde.
