What Does the Building Look Like?
The Vashon Hardware Store is actually made up of two wooden buildings connected together. They share the same front. The main building is one and a half stories tall. It measures about 40 feet wide and 125 feet long. The smaller building is about 16 feet wide and 40 feet long. Both parts were built around 1890. In 1973, they added ways to walk between the two buildings inside.
A Look Back: The Building's History
Starting as a General Store
The very first part of the building was built by Frank Gorsuch. He opened it as a general store. This was the first general store in the town of Vashon. It was also the fourth general store on all of Vashon Island.
New Owners and New Names
- In 1913, Frank Gorsuch sold the business.
- Fred and Henry Weiss bought it and named it "Weiss Bros. General Merchandise."
- In 1929, George McCormick and C. G. Kimmel bought the building. They changed its name to the "Vashon Hardware Store."
From Hardware to Restaurant
For many years, the McCormick family ran the building as a retail store. They sold all sorts of hardware items. Then, in 2005, the building got a new life! It was reopened as a restaurant. Now, it's a popular spot called The Hardware Store Restaurant.
