Vassal Abago Bagobagan Gadoengin (born May 1, 1943 – died December 15, 2004) was an important political leader from the small Pacific island nation of Nauru. He dedicated his life to serving his country.

Early Life and Education
Vassal Gadoengin went to school in the United States. He studied at Skagit Valley College in Washington state in the late 1960s. Later, in the early 1970s, he continued his education in Portland, Oregon.
Before he became a politician, Vassal Gadoengin worked as a teacher. He started his political career when he was in his mid-50s.
Political Career in Nauru
Vassal Gadoengin was an active member of Nauru's government. He was elected to the Parliament of Nauru in 1997. He won the seat that was previously held by Ruby Dediya. He was re-elected in the year 2000.
Minister of Finance
In March 2001, Vassal Gadoengin became the Minister of Finance. This meant he was in charge of Nauru's money and economy. He served in the government of Bernard Dowiyogo.
In 2003, he lost his seat in parliament to a new politician named Marcus Stephen. However, he won his seat back in special elections held in 2004.
Speaker of Parliament
Vassal Gadoengin was chosen to be the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru two times. The Speaker is like the referee of the parliament. They make sure meetings run smoothly and everyone follows the rules.
His first time as Speaker was from December 2002 to January 2003. He became Speaker again on October 26, 2004. He was still serving as Speaker when he passed away on December 15, 2004. After his death, Valdon Dowiyogo became the new Speaker.
