Vayland is a small place in Hand County, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city. It doesn't have its own local government like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's part of the larger Hand County area.

The Story of Vayland

Vayland started a long time ago. In 1909, people living there got their very own post office. A post office is a place where you can send and receive letters and packages. It was a very important building for communities back then, helping people stay connected. The Vayland post office stayed open for many years, until 1972.

The name "Vayland" comes from one of the first people to settle in the area. His name was J. C. McViegh. Early settlers were pioneers who moved to new areas to build homes and start new lives.
