Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn, born on September 25, 1951, is a talented Spanish-German mathematician. She has dedicated her career to teaching and research. From 2000 to 2018, she was a full-time professor at the University of Girona in Spain. Since 2018, she has been an emeritus professor at the same university. This means she is a retired professor who still keeps her title.
Before that, she was an associate professor at the Technology University in Barcelona from 1986 to 2000. Her work mainly focuses on understanding and analyzing different types of data, especially "compositional data." This is data where parts add up to a whole, like percentages of different ingredients in a mixture.
What She Studies
Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn is very interested in how to study and understand special kinds of data. She works with something called compositional data analysis. Imagine you have a pie chart showing how much of different things make up a whole. That's compositional data! She figures out the best ways to work with this kind of information.
She also uses ideas from algebra and geometry to solve problems in statistics. This helps her make sense of complex data. Another area she studies is spatial cluster analysis. This is about finding groups or patterns in data that are spread out over an area, like on a map.
Her Leadership and Awards
Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn has been a leader in her field. She was the president of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG) from 2008 to 2012. This is a big group of scientists who use math to study the Earth.
The IAMG has given her several important awards. In 2006, she received the William Christian Krumbein Medal. This award recognizes her excellent work in mathematical geosciences. In 2008, she also won the John Cedric Griffiths Teaching Award for being a great teacher.
In 2007, she was chosen as an IAMG Distinguished Lecturer. This meant she traveled to give talks about her research to other scientists. In 2015, she helped start a new international group for scientists who study compositional data.
Her Education
Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn studied at some excellent universities.
