The Verbena United Methodist Church was the very first church built in Verbena, Alabama, way back in 1877. It started as part of a group called The Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Today, it's a United Methodist church, and its current minister is Rev. Jody Hill.

A Look at the Church's History
Why People Moved to Verbena
In the late 1870s and 1880s, many families left the city of Montgomery, Alabama. They were worried about serious sicknesses like Yellow Fever spreading. To stay safe, some families moved to hotels. But many important families built summer homes in Verbena.
Building a New Community
As more people moved to Verbena, they built new places. They created hotels, stores, and schools. They also built churches. The Methodist Church was the first church to be built in Verbena. This happened in 1877. The original white wooden building is still used as the main worship area today.
