A Look Back at the Church's History
In the late 1870s and 1880s, many families in Montgomery, Alabama were worried. They were afraid of Yellow Fever outbreaks. This was a serious illness back then.
Because of this fear, many people left the city. Some stayed in hotels in safer areas. But many important families decided to build summer homes in Verbena.
Verbena became a popular place to escape the city heat and illness. As more people moved there, the town grew. New residents built hotels, stores, and schools. They also built churches.
The Methodist Church was the first church to be built in Verbena. It was finished in 1877. The original building is still used today as the main worship area. It is a white wooden structure.
