Verda M. Colvin is an important judge in the state of Georgia, USA. She currently serves as an associate justice on the Supreme Court of Georgia. Before this, she was a judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals.

Education and Early Life
Verda Colvin was born in 1965. She went to Sweet Briar College and earned her first degree there. Later, she studied law at the University of Georgia School of Law, completing her law degree in 1993.
Verda Colvin's Legal Career
Before becoming a judge, Verda Colvin worked in several different legal roles. She was a lawyer for the United States government, called an Assistant United States Attorney. She also worked as a lawyer for different counties in Georgia, helping to bring cases against people who broke the law.
She also served as a lawyer for Clark Atlanta University. These experiences helped her gain a lot of knowledge about the law.
Becoming a Judge
Serving on State Courts
On March 24, 2014, Governor Nathan Deal chose Verda Colvin to be a judge for the Macon Circuit Superior Court. This was her first time serving as a judge.
In 2016, Judge Colvin gave a speech to students about making good choices. This speech became very popular online and was watched by many people. It was even used by teachers to help their students. In June 2019, she was asked to join a special state judicial commission.
Appointment to the Georgia Court of Appeals
On March 27, 2020, Governor Brian Kemp appointed Judge Colvin to the Georgia Court of Appeals. She officially started this new role on April 10, 2020. She made history as the first African-American woman chosen for this court by a Republican governor in Georgia.
Joining the Georgia Supreme Court
On July 20, 2021, Governor Brian Kemp again appointed Judge Colvin to a higher position. She became an associate justice on the Supreme Court of Georgia. She took the place of Justice Harold Melton, who retired earlier that month.
