Verdiana Grace Masanja (née Kashaga, born October 12, 1954) is a brilliant Tanzanian mathematician. She is an expert in fluid dynamics, which is the study of how liquids and gases move. Dr. Masanja made history by becoming the first Tanzanian woman to earn a doctorate degree in mathematics.

Early Life and Education
Verdiana Masanja was born in Bukoba, a town in what was then called Tanganyika. She attended Jangwani Girls Secondary School in Dar es Salaam. Later, she studied at the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1976, she earned a degree in mathematics and physics. She continued her studies there and completed her master's degree in 1981.
Advanced Studies
Dr. Masanja then traveled to Germany to further her education. She earned a second master's degree in physics. She also completed her doctorate degree in fluid dynamics at Technische Universität Berlin. Her research focused on how certain types of fluids behave when they flow through pipes.
Career Journey
Even while she was a master's student, Verdiana Masanja began teaching at the University of Dar es Salaam. After finishing her studies in Germany, she returned to Tanzania and became a professor at the same university. She taught there until 2010.
Teaching and Leadership Roles
In 2006, Dr. Masanja also started teaching at the National University of Rwanda. By 2007, she became a full professor there. She also took on important leadership roles. She was appointed as the university's director of research. She also served as a senior advisor and deputy vice chancellor at the University of Kibungo in Rwanda. In 2018, she came back to Tanzania. She became a professor of applied and computational mathematics at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology in Arusha.
Promoting Mathematics and Women in Science
Dr. Masanja has also held many important positions in the world of mathematics. She served as the vice president for Eastern Africa of the African Mathematical Union. She led the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics in Africa. She also chaired the Tanzania Education Network. Her work has helped encourage more women to study mathematics in Africa.
Research and Publications
Beyond her work in fluid dynamics, Dr. Masanja has written about other important topics. She has published research on how to improve education and encourage more women to participate in science. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Rwanda Journal, a scientific publication.
