Vermontville is a small village located in Eaton County, in the state of Michigan, United States. In 2020, about 716 people lived here. It is part of Vermontville Township.

Vermontville is famous for hosting Michigan's very first maple syrup festival. This fun event happens every year on the last full weekend in April. Students in Vermontville attend Maple Valley Schools.

History of Vermontville

The village of Vermontville was started in 1836. It was founded by Reverend Sylvester Cochrane, a minister from Vermont, along with a group called the Union Colony. The village officially became a town on March 11, 1871, by a special law.

Important Buildings and Services

The Vermontville Township Public Library opened its doors on February 12, 1949. You can find the library on the first floor of the historic Opera House.

The Fire Department began in 1836. It was a team effort between the village and the township. Today, the township manages the fire department.

Some other important historical buildings include:

  • Vermontville Academy & Museum: Built in 1844, it was originally the First Congregational Church.
  • Vermontville Opera House: Built around 1893 or 1896, it was finished in 1898. The village and township own it together.
  • Vermontville First Congregational Church: This church was built in 1864.
  • Vermontville United Methodist Church: Built in 1862, it was moved to the village in 1877.

Vermontville covers a total area of about 1.27 square miles (3.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 1.26 square miles (3.26 square kilometers). A very small part, about 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometers), is water.

Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival

Vermontville is proud to host Michigan's first-ever maple syrup festival. This exciting event takes place on the last full weekend in April each year. The festival was first suggested in 1940 during a chat at a local barber shop. The idea was to help promote the village.

Festival Queen and Court

Young women who are in their junior year (11th grade) at Maple Valley Schools can compete for the title of Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival Queen. They also compete to be part of her court. This competition is a special part of the festival.

Parks and Recreation

Vermontville has several public parks for everyone to enjoy:

  • Public Square Park: This park is in the center of the village. It has playground equipment and picnic tables. There is also a memorial for Vietnam Veterans here.
  • Third Street Park: Located near the Water Tower, this park offers a pee wee ball field and a T-ball field. It also has playground equipment, a picnic pavilion, and a basketball court.
  • East First Street Park: This park has a ball field. It is used by a Youth Baseball League in May and June. The rest of the time, it is open for public use.
  • Paul Henry–Thornapple Rail Trail: This trail ends in Vermontville. It's a great place for walking or biking.
  • Conservation District Park: This park is at Mason Road and the Thornapple River, behind the High School. It has a launch area for canoes and kayaks, along with benches and parking.

  • Homer G. Barber (1830–1909): He was a state senator for Michigan.
