Her Early Life and Family
Veronica Turleigh was born Bridget Veronica Turleigh in County Donegal, Ireland, on January 14, 1903. She went to college at the Catholic University in Dublin. Her father, Martin Turley, was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary.
In 1928, Veronica married James Laver. He was an expert on fashion and a writer. Veronica and James had two children, a son named Patrick and a daughter named Bridget. Patrick later became a diplomat for Britain.
Her Acting Career
In the 1920s, Veronica Turleigh was a member of the Oxford Playhouse, a famous theater group. She worked with many well-known actors, including Alec Guinness and Robert Coote. Alec Guinness, who was a close friend, once said she was "one of the six nicest women I know."
Veronica played important roles in many plays. In 1939, she acted as Gertrude in a special version of Hamlet. This play was directed by Tyrone Guthrie and also starred Alec Guinness.
She also appeared in television shows. One of her roles was in the TV series The Saint in 1964. Her very last acting job on screen was in a show called The Root of All Evil? in 1969.
Later Life and Legacy
Veronica Turleigh passed away on September 3, 1971, after an accident at her home in Blackheath, London. Her friend, Alec Guinness, read at her funeral.
Because her husband, James Laver, collected items related to theater history, many things from Veronica's acting career are now kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This helps people remember her contributions to acting.
