Vicente Fidel López was an important Argentine historian, lawyer, and politician. He was born in Buenos Aires on April 24, 1815. He passed away in the same city on August 30, 1903. His father was also a well-known writer and politician, Vicente López y Planes.

Biography

Vicente Fidel López studied law and became a lawyer in 1837. He helped start several important groups. These included the "Society of Social and Historical Studies" and the "Literary Salon." He also helped create the "May Association."

From 1840 to 1852, he lived in Chile. He moved there because he did not agree with the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas. While in Chile, he worked with Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. They even started a private school together. In 1845, they published a book about Chilean history.

After Rosas was defeated, Vicente Fidel López returned to Argentina. He became a minister for his father's government. During this time, he wrote two historical novels. They were called "La novia del hereje" and "La loca de la guardia." He later moved to Montevideo and published more books.

He taught law and discussed legal ideas with Dalmasio Vélez Sársfield. From 1876 to 1879, he was a national deputy. This means he was a representative in the country's government. In 1891, he became the Minister of Economy. This happened during the presidency of Carlos Pellegrini. He was also an active member of the Freemasons.

Vicente Fidel López had a famous discussion with Bartolomé Mitre. This was about Mitre's book, "Historia de Belgrano y de la Independencia Argentina." Later, López wrote his most important work. It was called "Historia de la República Argentina." This huge history book was published in 10 parts between 1883 and 1893. He died in his home city of Buenos Aires in 1903.
