Vicente García González (born January 23, 1833 – died March 4, 1888) was a brave general during the Ten Years' War in Cuba. This war was a big fight for Cuba's freedom from Spain. Later, he even became a president of Cuba. Sadly, he was killed by the Spanish after the war ended.

His Early Life
Vicente García was born on January 23, 1833. His hometown was Las Tunas, a city in Cuba.
Leading the Fight
Vicente García became a general in the Cuban army. He fought in the Ten Years' War, which lasted from 1868 to 1878. This war was a long and difficult struggle for Cuba to become independent from Spain.
In November 1877, the president of the Cuban rebels, Estrada Palma, was captured by the Spanish. Another important leader, Maximo Gomez, was offered the presidency but he said no. Because of this, General Vicente García was chosen to be the new president of the Republic of Cuba. This was a very important role during a tough time for the Cuban rebels.
His Later Years and Death
After the war, on June 7, Vicente García left Cuba. He traveled to Venezuela on a ship called the Guadalquivir. He settled in a town called Rio Chico. There, he started a business with his family.
Even though he was in Venezuela, Vicente García continued to support the idea of Cuba becoming free. He encouraged new efforts for revolution. Because of his continued support for Cuban independence, the Spanish killed him on March 4, 1888.
