Vicente March facts for kids
Vicente March y Marco (born December 27, 1859, in Valencia, Spain – died March 31, 1927, in Benigànim, Spain) was a Spanish painter. He was best known for his portraits and landscapes. He also enjoyed taking photographs as a hobby. March was a costumbrista painter, which means he painted everyday scenes and customs of people.
About Vicente March
Vicente March learned to paint at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia. There, he studied with teachers like Gonzalo Salvá and Francisco Domingo Marqués.
Studying in Rome
In 1876, Vicente tried to win a special scholarship to study art in Rome, Italy. He came in second place. Even though he didn't win, his teacher, Francisco Domingo Marqués, told him to go to Rome anyway if he could.
After teaching for several years, Vicente saved enough money. In 1887, he and a friend finally traveled to Rome.
Once in Rome, they found a studio at the Palazzo Patrizi. They shared this art space with other Spanish artists, many of whom were from Valencia. These friends included Salvador Sánchez Barbudo and the brothers José and Mariano Benlliure. Vicente became lifelong friends with the Benlliure brothers.
He continued his art education at the Accademia Chigi. During the summers, he would travel to Naples and Venice to paint. He also took a trip to Morocco and Egypt. After this trip, he created many paintings with an "Orientalist" style, showing scenes and people from the Middle East and North Africa.
Exhibitions and Awards
After 1888, Vicente March regularly showed his paintings in cities like Berlin and Munich. He won several awards for his art.
In 1893, he won a Silver Medal at the Esposizione Internazionale di Roma (an international art show in Rome). His painting "The Spinner" earned him this award. The next year, he was one of the artists who helped create a special art album for Queen Maria Christina of Spain.
Later Life
In 1903, a few years after he got married, Vicente March left Rome. He moved to Xàtiva, a town in Spain where his wife's family lived.
Later, the Spanish government honored him by making him a Knight in the Order of Charles III. Most of Vicente March's paintings in Spain are owned by private collectors. This is because many of his artworks were sold to people in other countries.
In 1994, a big art show featuring his works was held in Subiaco, Italy, near Rome.
