Victoria Sanz Moreno is a brilliant scientist from Spain. She works as a professor at the Institute of Cancer Research in London. Her job is to study cancer cells and how cancer spreads in the body. She helps us understand this serious disease better.

Her Early Life and Education
Victoria Sanz Moreno was born in London, England. Her dad was a chemist, and her mom was an English teacher. When her dad finished his special studies, her family moved back to Spain.
Victoria studied chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Oviedo in Spain. She earned her master's degree in biochemistry there. Later, she got her PhD in chemical sciences from the University of Cantabria. She did this research in a lab led by Piero Crespo.
Her Amazing Career in Science
After a short research job at the University of Cantabria, Victoria moved to London. She joined the Institute of Cancer Research. There, she worked with Professor Chris Marshall. She received special fellowships from Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Marie Curie.
In 2011, Victoria received a CRUK Career Development Fellowship. This helped her start her own research group. Her group worked at King's College London. In 2017, she received an even bigger CRUK Senior Fellowship.
In 2018, she became a professor at Barts Cancer Institute. This is part of Queen Mary University of London. Barts Charity helped fund her work there. In 2023, she returned to the Institute of Cancer Research. Now, she is a Professor of Cancer Cell and Metastasis Biology. She leads a team that studies how cancer cells move and spread. This team is called the Cytoskeleton and Cancer Metastasis Team.
In 2014, Victoria also joined a special program. It's called Cancer Research UK's Women of Influence initiative. This program helps support other female cancer scientists. It gives them advice for their careers and personal growth.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Victoria Sanz Moreno has received many awards for her important work:
- In 2008, she won the Applied Biosystems and EACR 40th Anniversary Research Award.
- She was a finalist for the CRUK Communications and Brand Ambassador Prize in 2015.
- In 2017, she received the BSCB Women in Cell Biology Early Career Medal.
- In 2019, her old school, Colegio Inmaculada, gave her a Distinguished Alumnus Award.
- In 2021, she was chosen to be part of a phone app called "La Ruta de las Científicas." This app features nine female scientists.
- In 2022, she received the VP Award for Research Excellence from QMUL.
- Also in 2022, she won the Estela Medrano Memorial Award. This award is from the Society for Melanoma Research.
- She also received the Outstanding Contribution to Research Excellence Award at Barts Cancer Institute in 2022.
