A Look at History

The Railway Arrives

In 1885, a major railway line was built through the area. This railway connected the cities of Buenos Aires and Mendoza. The land where Vicuña Mackenna now stands was once owned by the province. It was known as "Bebe Vino." In 1874, Nicolás Avellaneda bought these lands from the Córdoba Province.

How the Town Started

After Nicolás Avellaneda and his wife passed away, their land was given to two of their sons. These sons later sold the land to a person named Clodomiro Torres. In May 1904, Clodomiro Torres asked the provincial government for permission. He wanted to create a farming village on his land. On June 6, the governor of the province, Vicente Olmos, approved his request. He ordered the creation of "Pueblo Torres."

Changing the Name

The railway station had been named Vicuña Mackenna since 1885. This name was chosen by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. He wanted to honor his friend, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna. Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna was a famous Chilean writer and historian.

In May 1911, the governor of Córdoba, Félix Tomás Garzón, made an important decision. He ordered that Pueblo Torres would now be called Vicuña Mackenna. This was the same name as the railway station. After this date, the name Pueblo Torres was no longer used in official papers.

Local Traditions

The town celebrates its local day on March 19.
