Viesca (pronounced VYES-kah) is a town in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila. It is the main town, or "seat," of the larger area called the Viesca Municipality.
The town was named after José María Viesca, who was an important governor of the region long ago. In 2005, about 19,328 people lived in Viesca. This included 9,695 men and 9,633 women.
What is Viesca like?
Viesca is a place with a rich history and a changing economy. It is known for being a "Pueblo Mágico," which means "Magical Town." This is a special title given to towns in Mexico that have unique cultural, historical, or natural beauty.
How Viesca Makes Money
For a long time, the main way people in Viesca earned a living was by working at a salt factory. This factory provided many jobs for the town's residents.
Changes in the Economy
However, the salt factory closed down in 1992. This was a big change for Viesca. Today, most jobs come from factories that put together auto parts. These factories help keep the local economy strong.
