Vietnamese iced coffee is a special drink from Vietnam. Its name in Vietnamese is cà phê đá, which simply means "iced coffee." It's a very popular and tasty beverage in Vietnam.

To make it, you use a special metal filter called a phin cà phê. This filter holds dark roast coffee grounds. Hot water slowly drips through the coffee into a cup below. Once the hot coffee is ready, it's poured over a glass full of ice. This makes a cool and refreshing iced coffee.

There are many ways to enjoy Vietnamese coffee. You can add ice, sugar, or sweetened condensed milk.

A very popular type is cà phê sữa đá. This is iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk. To make it, you put a few spoons of condensed milk in the cup before the coffee drips in.

Here are some other popular types:

  • Đen đá: This is iced black coffee, without milk.
  • Đen nóng: This is hot black coffee, also without milk.
  • Cà phê sữa nóng or nâu nóng: This is hot coffee with sweetened condensed milk.
  • Bạc xỉu: This is mostly milk, with just a little coffee added. It's like a macchiato and is popular in Saigon.

There's also Vietnamese egg coffee, called cà phê trứng. This type comes from Hanoi. It's made with brewed coffee, chicken egg yolk, and condensed milk. It tastes a bit like tiramisu or eggnog. Another unique kind is salted cream coffee from Huế. Some new versions even use avocado or coconut!

Where Did Vietnamese Coffee Come From?

Coffee first came to Vietnam in 1857. A French Catholic priest brought a single coffee plant, called Coffea arabica. People in Vietnam started to enjoy coffee, and they made it their own way.

At that time, it was hard to get fresh milk in Vietnam. So, both the French and Vietnamese started using sweetened condensed milk instead. They mixed it with strong, dark roast coffee. This is how the famous Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk became popular.

For a long time, Vietnam did not export much coffee. But after some big changes in the country, Vietnam started to grow a lot more coffee. Now, there are many coffee farms in the central highlands of Vietnam. Vietnam is now the world's largest producer of Robusta coffee. It is also the second largest coffee producer in the whole world!
