Vijaya Mehta (born 4 November 1934) is a famous Indian director and actress. She has worked a lot in Marathi films and theatre. She also acted in many films that are part of the "Parallel Cinema" movement. This movement focuses on realistic and artistic films.

Vijaya Mehta helped start a theatre group in Mumbai called Rangayan. She worked with other important artists like Vijay Tendulkar and Shriram Lagoo. She is well-known for her acting in the film Party (1984). She also directed popular films like Rao Saheb (1986) and Pestonjee (1988). As a founder of Rangayan, she was a key person in experimental Marathi theatre during the 1960s.

Early Life and Education

Vijaya Mehta was born as Vijaya Jaywant in Baroda, Gujarat, in 1934. She finished her college studies at Mumbai University. She learned about theatre from famous teachers. She studied with Ebrahim Alkazi in Delhi and with Adi Marzban. These experiences helped her become a great theatre artist.

A Career in Theatre and Film

Vijaya Mehta became a very important person in Marathi experimental theatre in the 1960s. She was one of the people who started the theatre group Rangayan. She worked with playwright Vijay Tendulkar, Arvind Deshpande, and Shriram Lagoo.

Her play Ek Shoonya Bajirao by C. T. Khanolkar is seen as a major moment in Indian theatre. She also brought famous international plays to Marathi theatre. She adapted Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle into Ajab Nyay Vartulacha. She also adapted Eugène Ionesco's Chairs.

Vijaya Mehta worked with German director Fritz Bennewitz on theatre projects. They even put on a traditional Indian play, Mudrarakshasa, with German actors. Most of her film and TV work came from her stage plays. One exception was the film Pestonjee.

She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975 for her excellent directing. In 1986, she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. This was for her role in the film Rao Saheb (1986).

Personal Life

Vijaya Mehta first married Harin Khote. He was the son of the famous actress Durga Khote. Sadly, Harin passed away when he was young. He left behind two young sons. Later, Vijaya Mehta married Farrokh Mehta.
