Vijaya Mehta (born November 4, 1934) is a famous Indian director and actor. She works in Marathi films and theatre. She helped start a theatre group called Rangayan in Mumbai. Other founders included Vijay Tendulkar, Arvind Deshpande, and Shriram Lagoo. She is well-known for her acting in the film Party (1984). She also directed popular films like Rao Saheb (1986) and Pestonjee (1988). As a founder of Rangayan, she became a key person in experimental Marathi theatre during the 1960s.

Early Life and Education

Vijaya Mehta was born as Vijaya Jaywant in Baroda, Gujarat in 1934. She finished her studies at Mumbai University. She learned about theatre from Ebrahim Alkazi in Delhi. She also studied with Adi Marzban, another theatre expert.

Her Career in Theatre and Film

Vijaya Mehta became a very important person in Marathi experimental theatre. This was especially true during the 1960s. She was a founder of the theatre group Rangayan. She started it with playwright Vijay Tendulkar, Arvind Deshpande, and Shriram Lagoo.

Important Stage Plays

Her play Ek Shoonya Bajirao by C. T. Khanolkar was a big moment for Indian theatre. She also brought famous European plays to Marathi theatre. She adapted The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht. This play was called Ajab Nyay Vartulacha in Marathi. She also adapted Chairs by Eugène Ionesco.

Working with German Directors

Vijaya Mehta worked on theatre projects with German director Fritz Bennewitz. They created plays together, mixing Indian and German styles. One project was a traditional play called Mudrarakshasa by Bhasa. German actors performed in this play. Most of her film and TV work came from her stage plays. The film Pestonjee was an exception.

Awards and Recognition

In 1975, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. This award was for her excellent work in directing. In 1986, she won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. She received this for her role in the film Rao Saheb (1986).

Personal Life

Vijaya Mehta first married Harin Khote. He was the son of the famous actress Durga Khote. Sadly, Harin passed away when he was young. He left behind two young sons. Later, Vijaya Mehta married Farrokh Mehta.
