Viktor Eduard Kingissepp was an important Estonian political figure. He was a founder and a main leader of the Estonian Communist Party. He lived during a time of big changes in Europe.

Viktor Kingissepp was born on March 24, 1888. His birthplace was Marientali, which is now part of Kuressaare, Estonia. His father worked in a factory.

Early Life and Education

As a schoolboy in Kuressaare, Viktor became interested in Marxist ideas. These ideas focused on how society and the economy should work. He helped create an Estonian branch of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party in St Petersburg.

During a war with Germany, he worked on a medical train. This train helped care for injured people on the Western Front.

A Time of Change: Revolutions and Politics

After the February Revolution, he returned to Petrograd. Petrograd was the new name for St Petersburg. There, he joined a group called the Bolsheviks. He also became part of the Red Guards. These groups were very active in the Russian Revolution.

After the Bolshevik Revolution, he worked in Tallinn, Estonia. He was a deputy chairman of the Estonian Revolutionary Soviet. When the German army occupied Estonia, he went back to Petrograd. He then worked with a special security group.

Organizing the Communist Party

In November 1918, Viktor Kingissepp returned to Estonia. He worked to organize the Estonian Communist Party. This party was not allowed by the government at the time. He led its first big meeting in November 1920.

His Final Days

On May 3, 1922, Viktor Kingissepp was arrested. This happened after a large public gathering in Tallinn. His life ended on May 4, 1922.

Remembering Kingissepp: His Legacy

After his death, several places were named in his honor. The Russian town of Yamburg was renamed Kingisepp. The Estonian town of Kuressaare was also called Kingissepa for a time.

The Estonian Drama Theatre in Tallinn was renamed after him too. Many streets in Estonian towns were called "Viktor Kingissepp Street" during the Soviet era. This shows how important he was to some people.
