Villa Nova is the second oldest football club still active in Minas Gerais. The club was started on June 28, 1908. It was founded in Nova Lima by English factory workers and miners. These workers were from the Morro Velho Mining Inc.
Golden Era in the 1930s
The 1930s were the best time for the club. Villa Nova won its first state title in 1932. They then won the first three championships in the professional era. These wins were in 1933, 1934, and 1935. The yellow star you see in the club's logo celebrates these important titles.
Winning the State Championship in 1951
Villa Nova won the Campeonato Mineiro again in 1951. They beat Atlético Mineiro in the final match. This game was played at Independência. The coach of the team in 1951 was Martim Francisco. He is known for inventing the 4-2-4 football tactic. This was mentioned in the book 'Inverting The Pyramid' by Jonathan Wilson. The book talks about how football tactics have changed over time.
National Title in 1971
In 1971, Villa Nova won the first-ever Campeonato Brasileiro Série B. This is a national championship. They won after beating Remo in the final game. The green star in their logo stands for this big national win.
