About Vincenzo Catena's Life
We don't know exactly when or where Vincenzo Catena was born. The first time we hear about him is on the back of a famous painting called Laura by another artist, Giorgione. On this painting, Catena is called Giorgione's "Cholego," which means colleague or friend.
His Early Painting Style
At first, Catena's painting style was very similar to Giovanni Bellini. Bellini was a well-known painter of that time. Catena's work didn't show Giorgione's influence until a few years after Giorgione passed away in 1510.
His Known Works
There are about twelve paintings by Catena that have his signature. This helps us know for sure that he painted them. Only one of these paintings has a clear date. It's called Martyrdom of St Christina. This painting was finished in 1520. You can find it in a church in Venice called Santa Maria Mater Domini. The date is carved into the marble frame around the painting.
Catena's Wealth and Friends
From his wills, we know that Catena was a wealthy man. He had many friends who were part of the humanist movement in Venice. Humanism was a way of thinking that focused on human values and achievements. These friends were often scholars and thinkers.
