A Daring Adventure Begins
The Forbidden Pond
In this book, we meet Violette Bellflower and her brother Periwinkle. They live in a place called Beechwood Grove. One day, they decide to play at a pond far away from home. Their family had warned them that this pond was too dangerous.
While at the pond, they meet a boy wearing unusual clothes. He plays a very catchy tune on his harmonica. The boy then invites them to have some cookies. This sounds like a fun offer to the young bunnies.
A Tricky New Friend
Periwinkle is very excited and starts to dance with joy. But Violette is much more careful. She realizes that the boy, named Jimmy Renard, is actually a fox! Foxes are known to be tricky.
Violette quickly tells Periwinkle they need to escape. She suggests they use the Big Passage. This is a secret tunnel system. The residents of Beechwood use it only for emergencies.
Caught by the Foxes
However, their escape plan is stopped. Several of Renard's helpers, who are also foxes, appear. They catch Periwinkle! The foxes plan to make him their dinner.
Violette feels terrible. She thinks her cleverness has failed. But she doesn't give up.
Violette's Brave Rescue
Escaping the Fox Den
Violette follows the foxes to their burrow, which is like a den. She bravely rescues her brother very quickly. Together, they rush into the Big Passage.
The foxes chase after them. But Violette and Periwinkle have a clever idea. They cause stones to fall from above. The stones shower down on the chasing foxes. This stops the enemies from following them.
Safe at Home
Both bunnies make it home safely. They tell their father, Papa Bramble, everything that happened. Papa Bramble is angry that they went to the dangerous pond. But he also sees how incredibly brave they were.
Later, the two tired siblings fall asleep at the dinner table. They soon have nightmares about their scary adventure. Papa Bramble reminds them of their bravery. He then goes to sleep, saying, "It seems the children haven't told me the entire story." This makes us wonder if there's even more to their daring tale!
