What is the Virgin of the Angels Painting?
This painting is a central part of what was once a much larger artwork called an altarpiece. An altarpiece is a big piece of art, often made of several panels, that sits behind the altar in a church. This one was made for a chapel in Tortosa cathedral around the 1380s.
What Does the Painting Show?
The main part of the painting shows the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus. They are surrounded by many angels who are playing musical instruments. This kind of scene, with Mary and Jesus surrounded by music-making angels, was very popular when this painting was made. It's a graceful and detailed picture that shows a lot of skill.
The painting also has two smaller sections at the bottom, called a predella. These sections show different saints. The predella pieces would have been on either side of a small cabinet or shrine, called a tabernacle, which was also part of the altarpiece.
Who Painted It?
The artist, Pere Serra, came from a family of painters. His family became very important in Catalan painting during the second half of the 1300s. They were known for their beautiful and detailed artworks.
