Who Was Pere Serra?
Pere Serra was born into a family of artists. His brothers, Jaume, Francesc, and Joan, were also painters. Like many artists in Catalonia during his time, Pere Serra was inspired by Italian paintings. He especially liked the style from a city called Siena.
His Early Career
In 1357, Pere Serra joined the workshop of another artist named Ramón Destorrents. A workshop was like a studio where artists worked together. Pere and his brothers helped paint a large altarpiece for the monastery of Santa María de Sigena. An altarpiece is a work of art placed behind the altar in a church. Today, this altarpiece can be seen at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Famous Works by Pere Serra
Pere Serra created many beautiful artworks. One of his most important paintings is called Arrival of the Holy Spirit. He finished it in 1394, and it is now in the cathedral of Manresa. Many people consider this painting his best work.
He also painted an altarpiece with Saints for the Monastery of Sant Cugat in 1375. Another one of his well-known pieces is a painting called Virgin with Six Musician Angels. He also created an Annunciation painting. Both of these are now in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, Italy.
