Who Was Ramón Destorrents?
Ramón Destorrents lived during the 14th century, a time when art was changing. He was a very important artist in his region. Many artworks that were once thought to be by other artists are now believed to be his.
Becoming a Royal Artist
In 1351, a famous painter named Ferrer Bassa passed away. After Bassa's death, King Peter IV of Aragon chose Ramón Destorrents to be his official court miniaturist. This meant Destorrents was the king's personal artist for creating small, detailed illustrations in important documents and books. Another well-known artist, Pere Serra, even worked in Destorrents' art studio.
Ramón Destorrents' Famous Works
Ramón Destorrents created many important artworks during his life.
- One of his notable pieces is a large painting for the church of Santa Maria de Manresa.
- He also painted a triptych (a painting made of three panels) for the church of Santa Maria of Iravalls in 1360. This triptych showed the influence of another famous Italian painter, Simone Martini.
- Destorrents also created special altarpieces, called retablos, for royal palaces. These included works for the palace in Valencia and for the chapel at the Royal Palace of La Almudaina in Palma de Mallorca.
- Another important work was for the Monastery of Santa María de Sigena.
