Virginia's Run is a 2002 Canadian-American independent coming-of-age drama film. It was directed by Peter Markle. The movie stars Lindze Letherman, Rachel Skarsten, and Gabriel Byrne. It was filmed in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. The story was written by Valarie Trapp. She based it on her own grandmother, Virginia.

Story of Virginia's Run

This movie is about a 13-year-old girl named Virginia Lofton. She lives with her older sister Caroline and their dad, Ford. Three years before the movie starts, Virginia's mom, Deborah, died in a horse riding accident. Because of this, Ford sold their horse, Twister. He also told his daughters they could not ride horses anymore. He wanted to keep them safe. Both Ford and Caroline thought Twister was to blame for Deborah's death.

Stormy the Foal

Later, Twister dies while giving birth to a baby horse. Virginia names the baby horse Stormy. Virginia secretly goes out to take care of Stormy. She also rides him at night. The horse's owner, Blake, tries to train Stormy to race. He wants Stormy to race for his son, Darrow. Darrow is also Caroline's boyfriend. But Stormy does not get along well with Darrow.

Blake decides to sell Stormy. Virginia is very sad about this. Her dad, Ford, finds out who bought Stormy. He buys the horse back and gives Stormy to Virginia as a birthday gift.

Virginia's Riding Dream

Virginia starts working with Jessie, one of Blake's horse trainers. Virginia tells Jessie how much she loves horses. She explains that riding helps her remember her mom. Ford talks to Jessie and explains he is trying to protect Virginia. Jessie tries to help Ford understand. She tells him that stopping Virginia from riding is hurting her spirit.

Ford then realizes that Deborah would not have wanted him to stop riding. She also would not want him to keep Virginia away from horses. He starts riding with Virginia and teaches her lessons. There is a horse race on Memorial Day. Ford thinks Virginia and Stormy are ready to compete.

The Big Race Challenge

Virginia is riding by herself one day. She meets Darrow and his friends. Darrow challenges her to a race to the train tracks. Virginia barely makes it, missing the train by just a few feet. Darrow sees that Virginia is a better rider than him. He decides he needs to stop her from winning the race.

Darrow and his friends kidnap Stormy. When Virginia finds out Stormy is missing, she is very upset. Her dad thinks Stormy just ran away. But Virginia tells her sister that she believes Darrow stole him. Caroline tries to find out what happened. She talks to one of Darrow's friends. The friend tells her where to find Stormy.

Virginia finds Stormy and rides to the town square. The race is about to start. The race officials do not want to let her race because she is late. But the crowd starts shouting, "Let Virginia Ride! Let Virginia Ride!" So, she is allowed to join the race.

Winning the Race

Virginia starts behind the other riders. But she quickly catches up. Darrow was in the lead from the start. When he sees Virginia, he tries to cheat. He knocks her off her horse. Then he hides a trail marker flag. He hopes she will get lost. Virginia cannot figure out which way to go using her map. But Stormy knows she is lost. He shows her the right way. She catches up to Darrow again and wins the race!

Darrow's father tries to get Virginia disqualified. He claims she broke a rule. Darrow tries to accept the trophy. Virginia notices something in his pocket. She tells Caroline to check it out. Caroline sneaks up and pulls out the hidden flag. Darrow is disqualified for cheating. Virginia then accepts the trophy. Two men from the crowd even toss the race official into a water trough!

Life After the Race

Later, the family is eating dinner with Jessie. Blake has fired Jessie from her job. Caroline has also broken up with Darrow. Virginia says that everyone is happier than they have been in a long time. She goes outside to feed Stormy. Virginia knows she would not have won the race without thinking of her mother.
