Viva! is a group in Britain that works to protect animals. It mainly focuses on promoting veganism, which means choosing not to eat or use any animal products. Juliet Gellatley started Viva! in 1994.

The group does secret investigations to show how animals are treated on large farms. They also provide helpful information for people who want to become vegan. This includes recipes and guides for shopping. Viva! is a registered charity, which means it works for good causes and not for profit.

What is Viva! and What Do They Do?

Viva! was first called "Vegetarians' International Voice for Animals." It began as a charity in 1994. This group is all about animal rights. They work to stop factory farming, where many animals are kept in small spaces. They also campaign against the way animals are killed for food.

Viva! has its main office in Bristol, England. They also have an office in Poland.

Important Campaigns by Viva!

Viva! has run many campaigns to help animals. Some of their well-known campaigns include:

  • End Factory Farming: This campaign aims to stop the cruel practices in large-scale animal farming.
  • Eat Green: This encourages people to choose plant-based foods for a healthier planet.
  • Foie-Gras Free Britain: This campaign works to ban a product called foie gras, which is made by force-feeding ducks or geese.
  • Ban the Farrowing Crate: This campaign tries to stop the use of small cages for mother pigs and their piglets.
  • The Dark Side of Dairy: This campaign highlights issues in the dairy industry, like what happens to male calves.

In 2018, Viva! investigated a pig farm called Hogwood Pig Farm. They also ran a campaign called "Scary Dairy's Trash." This campaign showed how male calves are often forgotten victims in the dairy industry.

Viva! Health: Helping People and Animals

Viva! also includes a part called Viva! Health. This group used to be known as The Vegetarian and Vegan Foundation. Viva! Health focuses on how nutrition and health are connected to eating plant-based foods. They provide information on how a vegan diet can be good for your body.

How Viva! Campaigns for Animals

Viva! uses different ways to get their message out and help animals. They often create adverts and protest against companies.

Campaigns Against Milk and Meat

In 2005, Viva! ran an advert against people drinking cow's milk. The advert showed a businessman drinking milk directly from a cow's udder. This was meant to make people think about where their milk comes from.

In 2009, Viva! spoke out against a supermarket chain called Tesco. Tesco had turned 5,000 tonnes of old meat into electricity by burning it. Viva! said this was not good for the environment because it created carbon dioxide. Tesco, however, defended their choice.

In 2010, Viva! protested against a store called Budgens. This store was selling squirrel meat. Viva! argued that selling squirrel meat led to a "needless cull" (killing) of grey squirrels.

Views on Cultured Meat

In 2012, Viva! said they supported the idea of cultured meat. This is meat grown in a lab, not from an animal. A former Viva! spokesperson, Justin Kerswell, said that anything that saves animals from suffering is a good thing. He also said that people should decide for themselves if they want to eat cultured meat. He explained that being vegetarian or vegan is a personal choice, not a religion.

Recent TV Advertisements

In 2022, Viva! showed a TV advert. It featured a couple ordering "pulled pork" from a company called "Just Meat." When the order arrived, it was a live piglet delivered with a meat cleaver. This advert was designed to shock viewers and make them think about eating meat.
