Vizcaíno Island facts for kids
Vizcaíno Island (also called Isla Vizcaíno in Spanish) is a cool island in Uruguay. It sits right where the Negro River meets the Uruguay River. The island has the Negro River to its south and the Uruguay River to its north. To the east is Vizcaíno creek, and to the west is Yaguarí creek. Yaguarí creek is a narrow, deep channel. It's the main way the Negro River flows into the bigger Uruguay River.
Island History
The first Europeans came to Vizcaíno Island in 1624. A group called the Jesuits started a mission there named Santo Domingo de Soriano. However, this mission later moved from the island to the nearby mainland.
Life on the Island
More people started living on the island when Pedro Millán began new businesses. He brought supplies from other towns, which helped the population grow. But people eventually left the island. They moved away to escape floods that often covered the land. They also moved to avoid attacks from some of the native people living there. Many of these people settled in what is now known as Villa Soriano.
Early Residents
Archaeologists have found signs that native people lived on Vizcaíno Island long ago. These early islanders were very protective of their land. They sometimes acted unfriendly towards new people trying to live there. Evidence shows that the number of native people in a small village called San Miguel del Río Negro decreased over time.
How to Get There
The closest towns to Vizcaíno Island are Baradero and Ibucuy port. Both of these towns are located in Argentina.
