Discovering Villa Soriano
Where is Villa Soriano?
Villa Soriano is located in the northwest part of Uruguay. You can find it at the end of Route 96. The town sits on the south bank of the Río Negro river. This river flows into the larger Río Uruguay about 10 kilometers (6 miles) away.
A Look at History
The story of Villa Soriano began in 1624. At that time, a group of Franciscan missionaries started a village. They built it for the local native tribes. They named this village Santo Domingo de Soriano.
This settlement was the very first permanent European town in Uruguay. It was built more than 50 years before Colonia del Sacramento, another important early city. In 1708, the town was moved to where it stands today. The building of its church started in 1751.
Villa Soriano has strong ties to General José Gervasio Artigas. He is a very important hero in Uruguay. People in Uruguay honor him as the country's liberator from the 1800s.
