Becoming a Weapons Designer
Vladimir Fyodorov finished his studies at the Mikhailovskaya Artillery Academy in 1900. After graduating, he joined the artillery committee of the Chief Artillery Directorate. This was a big step for him to start designing weapons.
Designing Automatic Rifles
Fyodorov worked on many different types of automatic rifles. These are guns that can fire multiple shots quickly without needing to be reloaded by hand after each shot.
- In 1912, he designed an automatic rifle that used 7.62 mm bullets.
- In 1913, he created another rifle using a 6.5 mm bullet that he designed himself.
- One of his most famous inventions was the Avtomat Fyodorova in 1916. This was one of the first assault rifles ever made. It was first meant to use a shorter 6.5 mm Arisaka rifle cartridge. However, it ended up using the full-sized 6.5 mm Arisaka cartridge because of testing issues and supply problems.
Fyodorov's automatic weapons were used during important historical events. They were used in World War I and the Russian Civil War.
After the Revolution
After the October Revolution, Fyodorov became a very important person in Soviet weapons production.
- From 1918 to 1931, he was the head and technical director of the first Soviet weapons factory. This factory made submachine guns that he designed.
- In 1921, he started and led a special design office at the automatic small arms factory.
- In 1922, he designed the Fyodorov-Shpagin machine gun with another designer.
Fyodorov also worked as a consultant for weapons and machinegun production from 1931 to 1933. He wrote many books about automatic weapons. Later, he became a small arms consultant for important government ministries from 1942 to 1946. From 1946 to 1953, he was a member of the Academy of Artillery Sciences.
Teaching New Designers
Vladimir Fyodorov was also a great teacher. He mentored many famous weapons designers, including Vasily Degtyaryov, Georgi Shpagin, and Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov. He wrote many scientific papers about the history, design, and use of small firearms.
