Vladimir Sergeyevich Seryogin (Russian: Владимир Сергеевич Серёгин; 7 July 1922 – 27 March 1968) was a brave Soviet pilot. He became famous for his skills during World War II and later as a special test pilot. He was also a friend and colleague of Yuri Gagarin, the first person to travel into space.

Early Life and War Hero

Vladimir Seryogin was born in Moscow, Soviet Union, on July 7, 1922. After finishing school, he decided to join the Red Army, which was the army of the Soviet Union. He quickly showed great talent for flying airplanes.

During World War II, Vladimir Seryogin flew many missions on the Eastern Front. This was a very important part of the war where the Soviet Union fought against Nazi Germany. His bravery and excellent flying skills earned him several important awards. One of the highest honors he received was the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. This award recognized his outstanding courage and service.

A Life as a Test Pilot

After World War II ended, Vladimir Seryogin continued his career in the Soviet Air Force. He studied engineering to learn even more about airplanes. After his studies, he became a test pilot. A test pilot flies new or modified aircraft to see how they perform. They check if the planes are safe and work correctly before others fly them. It's a very important and often dangerous job.

Seryogin worked at the Soviet Air Force Test Institute, where he helped improve many different types of aircraft. He was also in charge of an organization that prepared cosmonauts for their flights into space. This meant he helped train some of the first people who would travel beyond Earth.

The Final Flight

On March 27, 1968, Vladimir Seryogin was on a regular training flight. He was flying a MiG-15UTI jet with his good friend, Yuri Gagarin. Gagarin was a very famous person, known worldwide as the first human to fly in space.

During this flight, their jet crashed near the town of Kirzhach. Sadly, both Vladimir Seryogin and Yuri Gagarin died in the accident. Their bodies were cremated, and their ashes were buried with great honor in the walls of the Kremlin in Red Square, Moscow. This is a special place where many important figures from Soviet history are laid to rest.
