Vladislav Nikolayevich Volkov (Russian: Владисла́в Никола́евич Во́лков; born November 23, 1935 – died June 29, 1971) was a Soviet cosmonaut. He flew on two important space missions: Soyuz 7 and Soyuz 11. Sadly, his second mission ended in a tragedy. Volkov and his two crewmates passed away during their return to Earth. They are the only people known to have died in outer space.

Who Was Vladislav Volkov?

Vladislav Volkov was a brave Soviet cosmonaut. He was born in Moscow, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He became an Engineer and later joined the space program. His work helped the Soviet Union explore space.

Becoming a Cosmonaut

Volkov was chosen to be a cosmonaut in 1966. He was part of a special group of civilian experts. These experts were trained to fly spacecraft. Becoming a cosmonaut was a very difficult process. It required a lot of training and knowledge.

Missions to Space

Vladislav Volkov flew on two space missions. Both were part of the Soviet Union's space program. These missions helped scientists learn more about space travel.

Soyuz 7 Mission

His first mission was Soyuz 7 in 1969. Volkov served as the flight engineer. The mission lasted for almost five days. Its main goal was to try and dock with another spacecraft, Soyuz 6. This was a complex maneuver. It was an important step for future space stations.

Soyuz 11 Mission and Its Tragic End

Volkov's second mission was Soyuz 11 in 1971. This mission was very important. It was the first time cosmonauts successfully boarded and worked inside the world's first space station, Salyut 1. Volkov and his crewmates, Georgy Dobrovolsky and Viktor Patsayev, spent 23 days on the station. They set a new record for time spent in space.

Sadly, the mission ended tragically during their return to Earth. A technical problem caused the spacecraft to lose its air. Because of this, Vladislav Volkov and his two crewmates did not survive. This was a very sad day for space exploration.

Legacy and Honors

Vladislav Volkov is remembered as a hero of the Soviet Union. He was given this high honor twice. He was buried in a special place, the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, in Moscow. His bravery and contributions to space exploration are still remembered today.
