Voorhies is a small, unincorporated community located in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that does not have its own local government, like a city or town.
Voorhies is found in the very southwestern part of Black Hawk County. It is about 6 miles southwest of Hudson and 7 miles east of Reinbeck.
History of Voorhies
Voorhies was officially planned and laid out on June 17, 1900. This happened soon after the Chicago and Northwestern Railway built its tracks to this area. The railway was very important because it helped the community grow.
In 1904, Voorhies had several businesses. These included the Northern Grain Company, a cooperative telephone association, and a creamery. Today, there are two main businesses in Voorhies: a grain elevator called Voorhies Grain Company and Raincap Industries.
In 1924, the community of Voorhies had a population of 45 people.
