Vsevolod II Olgovich (died August 1, 1146) was an important ruler in Kievan Rus'. He was the Prince of Chernigov from 1127 to 1139. Later, he became the Grand Prince of Kiev, ruling from 1139 until his death in 1146. His father was Oleg Svyatoslavich, who was also a Prince of Chernigov.
Family Life and Children
Vsevolod married Maria Mstislavna of Kiev. She was the daughter of Grand Duke Mstislav of Kiev. Vsevolod and Maria had four children together:
- Sviatoslav III of Kiev
- Yaroslav II Vsevolodovich, who was born in 1139
- Anna of Chernigov, who married a prince from Halych
- Zvenislava of Chernigov, who married Boleslaw I the Tall, the Duke of Wroclaw
Choosing a Successor
Even though Vsevolod had two sons, he chose his brother, Igor, to be his successor. This was a bit unusual for the time. Vsevolod wanted to make sure that Igor would become the next ruler. He even asked the people of Kiev to promise their loyalty to Igor. They had to kiss the Holy Cross as a sign of their promise. However, many people in Kiev were not happy about this choice.
Not long before he died, Vsevolod became a monk. He took on the new name Gavriil. He passed away on August 1, 1146.
