About Víctor Patricio de Landaluze
Víctor Patricio de Landaluze was born in 1830 in Bilbao, Spain. He received a good education and learned several languages. For a while, he lived in Paris, France. He moved to Cuba around 1850.
Painting Cuban Life: Costumbrismo
Landaluze became well-known in Cuba for his style called costumbrismo. This type of art shows the everyday customs and traditions of a place. He painted many scenes of Cuban life, including:
- Cuban farmers, called guajiros
- Landowners
- People working on large farms
His paintings give us a valuable look into Cuban society in the 1800s. They often showed an almost perfect view of life on sugar plantations.
Teacher and Director at the Academy
Víctor Patricio de Landaluze also taught art. He worked at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba. He even became the director of this important art school.
Art and History
Landaluze's art often showed his views on politics. He did not support Cuba becoming independent from Spain. Even so, his paintings are very important. They help us understand what life was like in Cuba during the 1800s.

Landaluze also worked as an illustrator.

- In 1862, he started a funny newspaper with cartoons called Don Junípero.
- In 1881, he illustrated another book, Tipos y Costumbres de la Isla de Cuba.
Many of his famous paintings are kept in the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana in Cuba. One well-known painting is "Three Kings Day in Havana."
