The WBNS TV Tower is a very tall structure in Columbus, Ohio. It's a special kind of tower called a lattice tower. This means it's built from a strong framework of steel beams, making it look like a giant metal triangle. It helps WBNS-TV broadcast television signals.
A Tall Tower's History
The WBNS TV Tower is an important part of Columbus's skyline. It has been standing for a long time and has a cool history.
How Tall Is It?
When the tower was finished in August 1948, it was 595 ft (181 m) tall. That made it one of the tallest towers in the United States back then! Imagine how big that was.
Later, around 1955 or 1956, the tower was made even taller. It reached a height of 839 ft (256 m). At that time, it became the second tallest lattice tower in the whole country. Only the WTVR TV Tower in Virginia was taller.
Columbus's Tallest Structure
Even today, the WBNS TV Tower is the tallest free-standing structure in Columbus, Ohio. This means it stands on its own without needing extra wires to hold it up. It's still one of the tallest towers in the entire United States!
A Neighboring Tower
In 1981, something new happened. A different, even taller tower was built right next to the WBNS TV Tower. This new tower is called a "guyed candelabra tower." It's 313.3 m (1,028 ft) tall and uses strong wires (called "guy-wires") to keep it standing.
Today, WBNS-TV and WBNS-FM (a radio station) use this new candelabra tower for most of their broadcasts. Many other FM radio stations in Columbus, along with WCMH-TV, also use this super tall tower to send out their signals.
