WQED (TV) facts for kids
WQED (channel 13) is a special PBS television station located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It started on April 1, 1954. WQED was the very first TV station in the United States that was supported by its community. It was also the fifth public TV station ever.
WQED made history again in 1955. It became the first station to broadcast classes directly to elementary school classrooms. This happened when Pittsburgh started its Metropolitan School Service.
Over the years, WQED has created many famous shows for PBS. One of the most well-known is Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. This beloved show aired new episodes from February 19, 1968, to August 31, 2001. WQED hired Fred Rogers, who created and starred in the show.
WQED also publishes a magazine called Pittsburgh Magazine.
