The W New York - Downtown Hotel and Residences is a very tall building in New York City. It stands about 630 feet (192 meters) high. You can find it at 8 Albany Street in the Financial District of lower Manhattan.

This 58-story building was finished in 2010. It's one of the tallest buildings in New York.

What's Inside the W Downtown Building?

This building is special because it's both a hotel and a place where people live.

  • The hotel part has 217 rooms and is on floors 5 to 22.
  • The residential part has 223 luxury apartments, called condominiums. These are on floors 23 to 56.
  • The first four floors have lobbies for both the hotel and the apartments.

Amazing Views from the Top

If you go up high in the building, you can see some amazing sights!

  • On the 57th floor, there's a special viewing area for residents. From here, you can look out over the Hudson River.
  • The 58th floor has a terrace. This spot offers wide, sweeping views of all of lower Manhattan.

Who Designed and Built It?

The building was designed by a company called Gwathmey Siegel & Associates. The inside of the building was designed by Graft's Los Angeles office. The company that developed the building, meaning they planned and built it, is the Moinian Group. This group was started by Joseph Moinian.

The hotel officially opened its doors on August 18, 2010.

Fun Facts and Recent News

In 2010, the building was part of a TV show contest on HGTV. The winner of the contest received a $1.5 million apartment in the building as a prize!

In July 2020, it was announced that the hotel part of the building would close for a while. This was due to the coronavirus situation. Even though the hotel closed, people living in the apartments could still stay there. However, they lost access to some of the services that the hotel used to provide.
